A beer manufacturer. The company was originally founded in 1889 as Osaka Beer Company (reorganized as Osaka Beer in 1893). In 1906, Osaka Beer, Nippon Beer, and Sapporo Beer joined forces to form Dai Nippon Beer, which was later re-established as Asahi Beer in 1949 when Dai Nippon Beer was split up. With one of the leading figures in the financial world, Tamesaburo Yamamoto, as president, the company opened the Tokyo Omori Factory in 1962 (production ceased in 2002), and in 1964 established the subsidiary Hokkaido Asahi Beer (merged with Asahi Breweries in 1994). The company then completed the Kashiwa Factory in 1966, the Nagoya Factory in 1973, and the Fukushima Factory in 1979. The company took aggressive measures, such as launching Japan's first canned beer and the Steiny Style small bottles. In 1982, the company merged with EBIOS Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and entered the pharmaceutical business. The dry draft beer, Asahi Super Dry, launched in 1987, was a hit, and the company's market share rapidly expanded. In 1989, the company name was changed to Asahi Breweries. In 2011, the company transitioned to a pure holding company, changed its name to Asahi Group Holdings, and the alcoholic beverage business was taken over by the new corporation Asahi Breweries through a company split. In 2012, Calpis was acquired. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
