A mountain range that lies on the backbone of Italy. It is 1,350 km long and is also called the Apennines. It branches off from the Alps at the Cadibona Pass, west-northwest of Savona on the Gulf of Genoa, and runs down the Italian peninsula. The mountain range that reaches the Torto River in northern Sicily is also thought to be an extension of the Apennines. Mountain building began in the Eocene and Miocene, but it is a young mountain range whose current outline was formed by active activity in the Pliocene. Most of the range is 1,000 to 1,500 m above sea level, but it is the highest in the central part of the peninsula, with the highest peak, Mount Corno, at 2,914 m.
