Armadillo lizard - Armadillo lizard

A lizard of the family Armadillidae in the order Squamata of the class Reptilia. Its name comes from the fact that when it is in danger it curls up like an armadillo to protect itself. It is found in southern Africa. It is 20cm long, and the dorsal surface of its body from head to tail is covered in hard, spiny scales, but the underside has no spines. Therefore, when danger approaches it curls up, takes its tail, which is lined with long spines, in its mouth and places it on the weak underside of its abdomen to protect itself.

爬虫(はちゅう)綱有鱗(ゆうりん)目ヨロイトカゲ科のトカゲ。危険になるとアルマジロのように丸くなって身を守るのが名の由来である。アフリカ南部に分布する。全長20センチメートル、頭部から尾部にかけて体背面はとげ状の硬い鱗板に覆われているが、腹面にはとげがない。そのため危険が迫ると体を丸め、長いとげが並ぶ尾を口にくわえ、弱い腹面の上に置いて身を守る。
