Elamite - Elamugo

A language spoken in the ancient Elamite region, centered around Susa in southwestern Iran. The oldest form is Proto-Elamite, written in hieroglyphics around 3000 BC, but this has not yet been deciphered. Later, cuneiform writing was introduced, and there is a large body of material dating from the 13th to 7th centuries BC. Elam subsequently came under the control of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, and it was used in official inscriptions alongside Old Persian. The form of the language from this period is best understood, but its structure has not been fully elucidated and its lineage remains unclear.

イラン南西部のスーサを中心とした古代エラム地方の言語。最古相は紀元前3000年ごろの象形文字による原エラム語であるが、これは未解読である。その後、楔形(くさびがた)文字が導入され、前13世紀～前7世紀のまとまった資料がある。続いてエラムはアケメネス朝ペルシアの版図に入ったが、古代ペルシア語と並んで公的碑文に用いられた。この時期の姿がもっともよくわかっているが、十分に構造が解明されたわけではなく、系統関係も依然不明である。
