Mao Qiling - Already beautiful

A Chinese scholar from the early Qing Dynasty. Born in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang Province. He went by the name Xihe. He was a man of great learning and talent, well versed in the classics, history, geography, phonology, music, and poetry, as well as poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting. He was one of the pioneers of Sinology in the Qing Dynasty, and was particularly active in writing from an anti-Zhu Xi perspective. However, he also relied on his vast knowledge to refute the theories of such great scholars of the time as Gu Yanwu, Yan Ruoyang, and Hu Wei (1633-1714), which resulted in him being poorly regarded by later generations of Sinologists. However, the five volumes of "Poetry and the Refutation of Poetry," the eight volumes of "An Account of the Falsehoods of the Ancient Texts," the 30 volumes of "The Yi-shi of the Zhongs," and the four volumes of "The Analects of Confucius: A Review" are works that deserve to be reevaluated, even if they contain somewhat sophistry.

中国、清(しん)代初頭の学者。浙江(せっこう)省蕭山(しょうざん)の人。西河と号した。博学多才で、経史はもとより地理、音韻、楽律の諸学にも通じたほか、詩詞、駢文(べんぶん)、書画をもよくした。清代漢学の先駆者の一人であり、とりわけ反朱子の立場から旺盛(おうせい)な著述活動に従事したが、他方その博識を頼んで顧炎武(こえんぶ)や閻若璩(えんじゃくきょ)、胡渭(こい)（1633―1714）ら当時の碩学(せきがく)たちの学説にも反駁(はんばく)したため、後世、漢学者の間での評価は芳しくない。しかし、『詩伝詩説駁議』5巻、『古文尚書冤詞(えんし)』8巻、『仲氏易(ちゅうしえき)』30巻、『論語稽求篇(けいきゅうへん)』4巻などは、やや詭怪(きかい)の言語を含むとはいえ、やはり再評価されてよい論著である。『毛西河合集』498巻がある。
