...After working as assistant director on films such as J. Renoir's "A Southern Man" (1945), W. Wellman's "GI Joe" (1946), L. Milestone's "Arc de Triomphe" (1948), M. Ophuls's "Enchanted" (1949), and C. Chaplin's "Limelight" (1950), he started out by making television series, and with his rapid-fire technique and journalistic sensibility, he directed sports films from the baseball film "Big Leaguer" (1953) to the football film "The Longest Yard" (1974), as well as "Apache" and "Veracruz" (both 1954). These include westerns from "Kiss Me" (1955) to "Wild Apaches" (1972), crime films from "Kiss Me" (1955) to "Elegy to a Scarred Life" (1970), Hollywood inside stories from "The Big Knife" (1955) to "Scent of a Woman" (1968), melodramas from "Autumn Leaves" (1955) to "The Hustle" (1975), war films from "Attack on Titan" (1956) to "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) and "Dr. Jane" (1969), the ancient history drama "Sodom and Gomorrah" (1961), and horror films known as "Hollywood Gothic", such as "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?". He shot whatever he could get his hands on, from The Enterprise Company (1962), The Great Gatsby (1964), the Sinatra family western Four Men (1963), to comedies depicting the orgy of lecherous police officers, The Choir Boys (1977). He also shot the western The Gunfighter (1960), written by Dalton Trumbo, with whom he had been associated since his days as a member of The Enterprise Company, a group of progressive filmmakers who were forced out of Hollywood by the Red Scare. He favored using such distinctive actors, with their distinctive teeth, jaws, and eyes, and their intense aggressiveness, as Burt Lancaster, Jack Palance, Eddie Albert, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Marvin, and even older actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, to portray the sometimes grotesque, sometimes dynamic, Aldrich-esque human drama, in which the characters cunningly break the rules in a game of conflict and strife. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Gunfighter" are listed below.
