Striped Bonito - Pomfret

Japanese: シマガツオ(縞鰹) - シマガツオ（英語表記）pomfret

A marine fish of the family Pontetrixidae (illustration). Also known as Ethiopia. This is said to be because its body color turns black after it is caught, and because Japan became closely related to Ethiopia when it was caught in large numbers along the Pacific coast of Japan in the 1930s. It is an open-ocean fish that is found in tropical and polar regions around the world. In Japan, it is found mostly south of the central Pacific coast of Honshu. It is called Kuromanagattsuo, Tetsubin, Piya, and Biya in Tokyo, Hirabuta in Misaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Kuronbo in Kushiro, Hokkaido. Its body is flat and disc-shaped.

スズキ目シマガツオ科の海産魚（イラスト）。別名エチオピア。これは漁獲後に体色が黒変することと，1930年代に日本の太平洋岸で多獲されたころ，エチオピアとの関係が親密になったためといわれる。外洋性で，ほとんど全世界の熱帯から寒帯にかけて分布している。日本では本州太平洋岸中部以南に多い。東京でクロマナガツオ，テツビン，ピヤ，ビヤ，神奈川県三崎でヒラブタ，北海道釧路でクロンボと呼ばれる。体は平たい円盤状。
