Mikawa [village] - Mikawa

Japanese: 三川[村] - みかわ
Mikawa [village] - Mikawa
A village in Higashikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 4,396 (1995). Located at the mouth of the Agano River, the river flows west through the center of the village. The Ban'etsu West Line and National Route 290 run along the river, and the Mikawa Interchange on the Ban'etsu Expressway is located here. Most of the village area is covered by forests. In the early modern period, it was the territory of the Aizu Domain, and even after the abolition of the domains and establishment of prefectures, it belonged to Wakamatsu Prefecture, but was incorporated into Niigata Prefecture in 1886. The former Aizu Highway ran from Suwa Pass through Araya to the Akatani Basin, and Araya and Tsunagi flourished as post towns.
