Tomb of Emperor Nintoku

Japanese: 仁徳陵 - にんとくりょう

This large ancient tomb is located in Daisen Town, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. It is a keyhole-shaped tomb with a total length of 486m and a diameter of 249m, making it the largest in Japan. It is surrounded by three moats, and there are more than a dozen auxiliary mounds inside and outside the moats. A long-box-shaped stone coffin is placed in a vertical stone chamber, along with a helmet with a visor and short armor. There are also many cylindrical and house-shaped haniwa clay figures. This tomb is officially designated as the Mozu-no-mimi-hara-naka tomb where Emperor Nintoku was buried, but due to a lack of archaeological evidence, it is also called the Daisen Tomb or Daisen Tomb.

大阪府堺市大仙(だいせん)町にある大型古墳。前方後円墳で全長486m，後円の径249m，日本最大。３重の濠をめぐらし，濠の内外に十数基の陪冢(ばいちょう)がある。竪穴(たてあな)式石室に長持形の石棺を納め，眉庇(まびさし)付冑(かぶと)，短甲等が置かれていた。円筒埴輪(はにわ)，家形埴輪等も多い。この古墳は仁徳天皇を葬った百舌鳥耳原中(もずのみみはらなか)陵に治定(じじょう)されるが，考古学上の立証を欠くため大山(だいせん)古墳あるいは大仙古墳とも呼ばれる。
