Urugi [Village] - Urugi

Japanese:
Urugi [Village] - Urugi
A village in Shimoina County, at the southern tip of Nagano Prefecture. Population 756 (1995). A mountain village located in the upper reaches of the Uruki River, a tributary of the Tenryu River, bordering Aichi Prefecture to the south. National Route 418 crosses the northern part of the village. In 1948, Toyo Village was separated into Uruki Village and Wago Village. Almost the entire area is covered by forests and wilderness, with only a few cultivated lands scattered along the rivers. In the Edo period, forest development began early on, with the payment of cedar timber as annual tax. Horses were also widely raised for transportation and farming. Agriculture and forestry are still the main industries in the village, and rice, highland vegetable cultivation, beef cattle breeding, and shiitake mushroom production are also carried out, but the population has been declining in recent years.
