Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 491-518. After the death of the previous emperor Zeno, he married Empress Ariadne at the advanced age of 61 and ascended to the throne with the support of the army and the senate. In 497, he put down a rebellion by the Isaurian tribe, and later showed his skill as an economic bureaucrat, abolishing the city's business tax, reforming the currency into gold and copper coins, increasing taxes on farmers, and converting taxes to gold, thereby saving 320,000 pounds of gold coins. In religion, he supported Monophysite Christianity, which was considered a heresy, and led to the Trishagion rebellion (512) by the capital's residents who opposed it, and then the rebellion of General Vitalian (513-515).

ビザンティン皇帝。在位491‐518年。前皇帝ゼノンの死後61歳の高齢で皇妃アリアドネと結婚，軍と元老院の支持の下に即位。497年イサウリア族の反乱を鎮圧し，のち経済官僚出身の手腕をみせ，都市の営業税の廃止，金貨･銅貨の通貨改革，農民に対する課税額の増加および税金の金納化等により32万ポンドの金貨を貯えた。宗教的には異端とされたキリスト単性説を支持，これに反対する首都住民によるトリスハギオンの乱(512)，さらにウィタリアヌス将軍の乱(513‐515)を招いた。
