An evergreen tall tree of the Rutaceae family. It is considered a variant of Amadai and is a representative species of the so-called citrus fruits. Many varieties are known, but the most common is the Washington navel. It is a horticultural variety that appeared in Brazil in the early 19th century, and after being imported to California in the United States in 1870, it spread to Spain and other parts of the world. It grows to a height of 4 to 10 meters. The leaf stalks have narrow wings, and the flowers are white and fragrant. The fruit is almost spherical, with a small umbilicus-like capsule at the apex, and is characterized by its good taste and fragrance. It was once cultivated extensively in Hiroshima Prefecture, Ehime Prefecture, and other areas in Japan, but production is currently declining due to its poor cold resistance and incompatibility with humid climates.
