Jakkoji Temple

Japanese: 寂光寺 - じゃっこうじ

This temple is of the Kenhon Hokke sect and is located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is called Kuchuzan (Mount Kuchu). It was founded in 1580 in Konoe-cho, Muromachi, Kamigyo by Kuon-in Niben, the head priest of Myoman-ji Temple, one of the 16 main temples of the Nichiren sect (Hokke sect) in Kyoto, and the representative of the Kyoto Nichiren sect in the Azuchi Debate of 1579 (Tensho 7), who lost in a sect debate with the Jodo sect. The temple was later moved around Kyoto, and was moved to its current location in the mid-Edo period. This temple attracted the attention of the world because it produced the Go master Sansa Nikka (Honinbo Sansa), the first Honinbo.

京都市左京区にある顕本法華宗の寺。空中山と号する。京都日蓮宗(法華宗)16本山の一つであった妙満寺の貫主であり，また1579年(天正7)安土宗論において京都日蓮宗を代表する一人として浄土宗と宗論して敗れた久遠院日淵が，宗論の翌80年，別に上京の室町近衛町に開創した寺。そののち，寺地は洛中を転々し，江戸中期から現在地に移った。当寺が世に注目されるのは囲碁の名人，本因坊1世の算砂（さんさ）日海(本因坊算砂)が出たからである。
