A sect of early ascetic Christians. The name comes from the Hebrew evyonium (poor). According to Irenaeus, they believed only in God as creator and denied the divinity of Jesus. They did not accept the virgin birth, and said that Jesus was the son of Joseph and Mary, and that he became Christ through the fulfillment of the Law. They also rejected Paul as a transgressor of the Law, and were therefore considered heretics. They are said to have used their own "Ebionite Gospels." They arose after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 and developed on the east bank of the Jordan River, with some of them adopting Gnosticism (→Gnostics).
