Fuzankai - Fuzankai

An art group formed by innovative young artists in the early Taisho period. In October 1912 (Taisho 1), Takamura Kotaro, Saito Yori, Kishida Ryusei and others initiated the first exhibition, held on the Yomiuri Shimbun building in Ginza. They also published the journal Fuzan. In addition to the aforementioned artists, 33 artists exhibited at the first exhibition, including Kimura Shohachi, Yorozu Tetsugoro, Kiyomiya Hitoshi, Bernard Leach, sculptor Kawakami Kuniyo, and craftsman Fujii Tatsukichi. The tendency of the works was to follow the Post-Impressionist or Fauvist styles introduced by the new returnees from Japan in the 1900s and the magazine Shirakaba, and they were characterized by thick lines, powerful touches and strong colors. Although there were some immature aspects to his works, his fresh style, which strongly expressed his subjectivity, had a great influence on young artists of the time. The second exhibition was held in March of the following year, but the number of exhibitors had nearly halved, and due to differences in the policies of Ryusei and Yori, the exhibition was disbanded after only two exhibitions. Incidentally, fusain means charcoal drawing in French, and the spelling of "fusain" was corrected from the second exhibition.

大正初期の革新的な青年作家によって結成された美術集団。1912年（大正1）10月、高村光太郎(こうたろう)、斎藤與里(より)、岸田劉生(りゅうせい)らの発起により、第1回展を銀座読売新聞社楼上で開催。さらに機関誌『フュウザン』を発行した。第1回展には前記のほかに木村荘八(しょうはち)、萬(よろず)鉄五郎、清宮彬(せいみやひとし)、バーナード・リーチや彫刻の川上邦世、工芸の藤井達吉ら33名が出品した。作品の傾向は、明治40年代の新帰朝者や雑誌『白樺(しらかば)』によって紹介された後期印象派ないしフォービスムを追うものが多く、太い線や力強いタッチ、強烈な色調などを特色とする。全体に未熟な点もあったが、その主観を強く打ち出した清新な作風は、当時の青年作家に多大の影響を及ぼした。第2回展は翌年3月に行われたが、出品者は半数近くにまで減り、また劉生と與里の方針の食い違いもあって2回限りで解散に至った。なお、フュウザンfusainとはフランス語で木炭画の意味で、最初ヒュウザンと表記したのを第2回から訂正したという。
