A former town in Niihari County in central Ibaraki Prefecture. It occupies the Kakioka Basin, surrounded by the Tsukuba Mountains. Kakioka, in the center, developed as a castle town. Fruit cultivation, including persimmons, pears, mandarin oranges, and grapes, is thriving. Shiitake mushrooms and shimeji mushrooms are also produced here. There is a geomagnetic observatory run by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Incorporated into Ishioka City in October 2005. Area: 153.78 km2 . Population: 30,523 (2003). 茨城県中部,新治(にいはり)郡の旧町。筑波山地に囲まれた柿岡盆地一帯を占める。中心の柿岡は城下町として発達。カキ,ナシ,ミカン,ブドウなどの果樹栽培が盛ん。シイタケ,シメジも産する。気象庁地磁気観測所がある。2005年10月石岡市へ編入。153.78km2。3万523人(2003)。
