Marigoke (moss ball) - Marigoke

Japanese: マリゴケ(毬蘚) - マリゴケ
Marigoke (moss ball) - Marigoke
This refers to a colony of moss that grows near the water surface on the shore or in the water of a lake or pond, and is scraped away by the movement of the water and waves, and as it rotates on the bottom of the water, it takes on a shape similar to the algae marimo. Mosses that form this include Gemium nigricans, Gemium nigricans, and Gemium platyphyllum. The most famous ones are those found in Lake Kussharo and Lake Akan in Hokkaido. The Gemium platyphyllum marigokei of Lake Inawashiro in Fukushima Prefecture has been designated a natural monument, but is now almost extinct.
