A general term for invertebrates belonging to the phylum Ectoprocta, class Bryozoa, phylum Tentaculata. This name comes from the resemblance of their external shape to the plant moss. Individuals less than 1 mm in length gather together in large numbers to form colonies of various shapes, such as dendritic, disk-like, and clump-like, and attach to rocks, shellfish, and seaweed. The Sargassum bryozoan can grow up to 1 meter in length. Most are marine, distributed from the intertidal zone to the deep sea, but a few are found in lakes and ponds in various places.
