…In the first half of the 19th century, when the trend toward specialization in science was finally becoming evident, he stood between classical liberal arts education and specialized education in individual sciences, and made many achievements in the fields of education and science. In education, he basically placed renewed emphasis on classical liberal arts, but also tried to introduce science education. On the other hand, he criticized the way science had become independent of theology and strongly advocated natural theology, while following the example of Germany and France, cooperating in expanding institutional support for scientific research (for example, the establishment of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS)). From this, he himself invented neologisms such as "scientist" and "physicist" to describe specialized scientific researchers. …

…科学の専門化傾向がようやくはっきりしてきた19世紀前半に，古典的な教養教育と個別科学的な専門教育とのはざまに立って，教育論，科学論の分野で多くの業績を残した。教育論では，基本的には古典教養を改めて重視しつつ，科学教育の導入にも努め，一方では神学を離れてひとり歩きしはじめた科学のあり方を批判し自然神学を強く主張しながら，ドイツ，フランスの例に倣って，科学研究の制度的支援(例えばイギリス科学振興協会BAASの設立)の拡充に協力する，という両面的立場にいた。こうしたなかから，〈scientist〉〈physicist〉など専門的科学研究者を表現する新造語をみずから案出している。…
