A marine fish of the family Pleuronectidae. It is commonly seen throughout Japan from southern Hokkaido southward, and has many local names due to its important edible fish species. In Sendai it is called Aome, in the Hokuriku region it is called Kuchiboso because of its small mouth, and in the Chugoku region it is called Hosokuchi or Yamabushigarei. It is also simply called Mako. Those caught on the seabed near the castle ruins in Hinode Town, Oita Prefecture are called Shiroshitagarei (castle flounder) and are highly prized. The spawning season is from December to mid-February, and they participate in spawning when they reach a body length of 20 cm or more. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
