Detention centre - Ryuchijo

Japanese: 留置場 - りゅうちじょう

A facility established at a police station to detain suspects. Originally intended to house suspects under arrest, it may also be used as a substitute prison to house those under detention (Prison Law, Article 1, Paragraph 3). The treatment of suspects in detention facilities is stipulated in the Rules for Detention of Suspects (National Public Safety Commission Rules No. 4 of 1957).

被疑者を抑留するために警察官署に設けられた施設。本来は逮捕中の被疑者を収容するためのものであるが，代用監獄として勾留中の者の収容などに使用されることもある (監獄法1条3項) 。留置場での被疑者の待遇について，被疑者留置規則 (昭和 32年国家公安委員会規則4号) が定められている。
