A leader of Islamic reform in the Western Sudan in the early 19th century. As a Sufi Islamic teacher and intellectual, he sought to purify the Islamic faith, founded the Fulani kingdom in what is now northwestern Nigeria, and ruled over the neighboring Hausa states. Born into a family of Fulani scholars who had migrated from the Fouta Tolo region upstream the Senegal River in the 15th century, he studied under his father and other Islamic scholars in his family, and began working as a teacher around 1774-75. In the 1780s and 1790s, he gained fame along with his brother Abd Allah, a prominent Islamic scholar and disciple, and his son Muhammad Bello, and won the support of Hausa peasants.

19世紀初期，西スーダン地域におけるイスラム改革指導者。スーフィーのイスラム教師･知識人として，イスラム信仰の純化を図り，現在のナイジェリア北西部にフラニ王国を創設し，近隣のハウサ諸国を支配した。15世紀ころにセネガル川上流のフータ･トロ地方から移住したフラニ族の学者の家に生まれ，父や近親のイスラム学者について学び，1774‐75年ころから教師として活動を始めた。80,90年代には，優れたイスラム学者で弟子の一人でもある弟アブド･アッラーフ，息子ムハンマド･ベロとともに，彼の名声は上がり，ハウサ族農民の支持をも得た。
