As a Sufi Islamic teacher and intellectual, he sought to purify the Islamic faith, founded the Fulani kingdom in what is now northwestern Nigeria, and ruled over the neighboring Hausa states. Born into a family of Fulani scholars who had migrated from the Fouta Tolo region upstream the Senegal River in the 15th century, he studied under his father and other Islamic scholars in his family, and began working as a teacher around 1774-75. In the 1780s and 1790s, he gained fame along with his brother Abd Allah, a prominent Islamic scholar and disciple, and his son Muhammad Bello, and won the support of Hausa peasants.
