A general term for flatworms belonging to the class Turbellaria. These include flatworms, planarians, and giant planarians. With a few exceptions, they live freely in freshwater, saltwater, and wetlands. Their bodies are dorsally and ventrally flat and soft, and can be spindle-shaped, string-shaped, elliptical, or leaf-like. They are covered in whole or in part with cilia, and move by the movement of these cilia. Their mouths are usually located at the anterior end of the ventral surface of the body or slightly forward of the center. The muscles of the esophagus that connects to the mouth are modified to form the pharynx, which protrudes outside the body when feeding, and its form can range from simple to complex.
