After his death, a dispute arose over the succession between his legitimate son and Danish king Hardeknud (reigned 1035-42) and his half-brother Harald Harefod (Harold I, reigned 1037-40), and in 1037 Harald became king of England, forcing Hardeknud into exile. In 1040, Hardeknud ascended to the throne after Harald's death, but he died two years later. In Denmark, King Magnus I the Good and in England, King Edward the Confessor, succeeded to the throne, and Canute's North Sea Empire collapsed. …
