During germination, they are hydrolyzed to produce fatty acids, some of which are used to synthesize lipids, but most of the remaining part is converted to sugar through beta-oxidation by glyoxysomes and the glyoxylate cycle, and then used for embryo growth. It is known in plants such as cotton that seeds will still germinate if they are separated from the mother plant before they are fully ripe and planted (precocious germination). In this case, the process of seed formation that would normally take place inside the mother plant takes place inside the immature seed, so it is used as a powerful experimental tool to determine how far the seed formation process had progressed at the time of separation. …
