Colon Classification

Colon Classification

...In addition, the Japanese National Diet Library Classification (abbreviated NDL), published in 1963-68, uses a non-decimal system of symbols, combining one or two letters from A to Z with numbers from 1 to 999. Unlike the above-mentioned method of assigning a book to a ready-made classification item that matches the subject of the book, the Colon Classification (abbreviated CC), invented by the Indian Shiyali Ramanrita Ranganathan (1892-1972) (1933), uses a method of constructing classification symbols according to facets that can capture compound titles by analyzing the title structure. In the East, the classification of the so-called Four Ku Quanshu, which classified the series of books collected by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, is known as the Four Ku Classifications: Jing, Shi, Zi, and Shu.
