1853‐1938 Spanish critic and novelist. Born in Asturias. After a successful career in literary criticism, he turned to novels. As a naturalist writer, he had a keen observational eye, and was particularly adept at analyzing the psychology of women. His most famous work is Marta and Maria (1883), which tells the story of the fanatical Maria and the friendly Marta sisters, but his most popular work is Nun San Sulpicio (1889), which depicts the love between a man from the north and a passionate woman from the south.
