Spanish critic and novelist. Born in Asturias. After a successful career in literary criticism, he turned to novels. As a naturalist writer, he had a keen observational eye, and was particularly adept at analyzing the psychology of women. His most famous work is Marta and Maria (1883), which tells the story of the fanatical Maria and the friendly Marta sisters, but his most popular work is Nun San Sulpicio (1889), which depicts the love between a man from the north and a passionate woman from the south. スペインの評論家，小説家。アストゥリアス地方の生れ。文芸批評で活躍したのち，小説に転じた。自然主義作家として観察眼にすぐれ，とくに女性心理の分析を得意とした。狂信的なマリアと人なつこいマルタの姉妹を主人公にした《マルタとマリア》(1883)が代表作だが，最も人気を博したのは北部の男性と南部の情熱的女性の恋を描いた《サン･スルピシオ尼》(1889)である。【志賀一郎】
