The Makishi Incident

Japanese: 牧氏の変 - まきしのへん
The Makishi Incident
In 1205 (Genkyu 2), Maki no Kata, the second wife of Hojo Tokimasa, the first regent of the Kamakura shogunate, conspired with her husband to assassinate Shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo and install her son-in-law, Hiraga Tomomasa, who was adopted by Yoritomo, as Shogun, but failed. Maki no Kata was the daughter of Ooka (Maki) Munechika, who had served Taira no Yorimori for many years and had been entrusted with Ooka Maki in Suruga Province, and her marriage to Tokimasa dates back to before 1182 (Juei 1). In November 1204 (Genkyu 1), Tomomasa, who was in Kyoto as the governor, got into an argument with Hatakeyama Shigeyasu (Shigetada's son) during a drinking party and falsely accused Shigeyasu against Maki no Kata, and in June of the following year, Tokimasa and his wife annihilated Shigetada and Shigeyasu, father and son, despite the pleas of Yoshitoki, Tokifusa, and others.
