A German poet active in the second half of the 12th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was from Verdeke near Maastricht (now part of the Netherlands) and served as a squire to the Duke of Loon. His major work, the Aeneid, is an adaptation of the French Aeneas story, and has love (Minne) as its theme, making him the founder of a new German court epic and the founder of German poetic form. He was fluent in both Middle Rhine and High German, and his first work was the saint's story Servatius (c. 1170), as well as troubadour-style lyric poetry.
