Japanese: カーマ(英語表記)Khama, Seretse
Khama (English spelling)
Born: July 1, 1921, Serowe
[Died] July 13, 1980, Gaborone. Botswana politician. Born to the chief of the Ngwato tribe, the largest tribe in the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland, he became chief at the age of five. After graduating from Fort Hare University and the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, he went to England and studied law, politics and economics at Balliol College, Oxford. During this time, he was criticized by his tribe for marrying a British woman, and in 1956 was allowed to return to the country on the condition that he renounced his position as chief. In 1961, he founded the Bechuanaland Democratic Party (BDP) and became its leader, and was elected in the first Legislative Council election that same year. In 1965, he won the Legislative Assembly election and became Prime Minister of the autonomous government. In September 1966, he became the first President of the Republic of Botswana upon independence. Although he maintained a moderate and pro-Western attitude, from 1974 he was active as one of the leaders of the southern African frontline countries, such as supporting Zimbabwe's independence. He was elected president for a fourth term in October 1979. He died of illness in 1980.
