The term "modern dance" was coined in 1933 by the American critic John Martin, who defined the free dance of John Duncan (also known as New Dance), the Neue Tanz (later called Moderne Tanz) of the Germans Michael Wigman and others, and the dance of the American Michael Graham and others.
