contemporary dance

The term "modern dance" was coined in 1933 by the American critic John Martin, who defined the free dance of John Duncan (also known as New Dance), the Neue Tanz (later called Moderne Tanz) of the Germans Michael Wigman and others, and the dance of the American Michael Graham and others. However, with the development of the style since then, it is now often called "contemporary dance" in the West and "modern dance" in Japan.

Duncan was not satisfied with the classical ballet techniques he had learned since childhood, and instead ignored the forms and steps of dance classics to create dance that glorified "humanity" through natural and free expression.

…〈モダン･ダンス〉という言葉は33年にアメリカの評論家マーティンJohn Martinが，ダンカンのフリー･ダンスfree dance(ニュー･ダンスともいう)，ドイツのM.ウィグマンらのノイエ･タンツNeue‐Tanz(のちにモデルネ･タンツといわれた)やアメリカのM.グラームらのダンスを総称し定義づけたことに由来がある。しかし，その後の発展にともない，現在欧米では〈コンテンポラリー･ダンスcontemporary dance〉，日本では〈現代舞踊〉の名称で呼ぶことが多くなっている。
