Pope of the Roman Catholic Church (reigned 1447-1455). During the period of turmoil following the Council of Basel (1431-1437), he defeated antipopes, defended the papacy, and ended the schism. He promoted church reform by favoring Nicholas of Cusanus and others, and also patronized the Renaissance arts and sciences, planning the construction of a new St. Peter's Basilica and rebuilding the Vatican Library.
