Born June 2, 1904, near Timisoara, Romania [Died] January 20, 1984. Acapulco, Mexico. American swimmer. Competed in the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, winning five gold medals in freestyle and relay events and setting 67 world records. In 1950, he was voted "the greatest swimmer" of the first half of the 1900s by 250 sports journalists. After retiring, he became a movie actor and gained popularity for his role as Tarzan.
