Located in the Residenzplatz in Innsbruck, the capital of the state of Tyrol in western Austria, this balcony is a symbol of the city. The Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519), who made Innsbruck his capital, had the five-story Habsburg Tyrolean palace facing the square built around 1500 as a balcony from which to watch events in the square. The Golden Roof came to be called the "Golden Roof" because the roof was covered with copper sheets covered in gold leaf. The original relief used on the Golden Roof is on display at the Tyrolean State Museum in the city. Source: Kodansha World Tourist Attractions Encyclopedia Information |
