[Died] June 6, 1881. Mustapha, Algeria. Belgian violinist and composer. One of the people who had a great influence on the development of violin playing techniques. He was said to be a child prodigy, and made many concert tours in Europe accompanied by his father. He studied under Charles de Bériot in Brussels from 1829 to 1831, harmony under Simon Sechter in Vienna from 1833 to 1834, and composition under Antonin Reicher in Paris from 1835 to 1836. He continued to perform in various parts of Europe and made three concert tours to the United States (1843 to 1844, 1857 to 1858, 1870 to 1871). He taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia from 1846 to 1851, and at the Brussels Conservatory from 1871 to 1873, and had a great influence on Russian violin playing in St. Petersburg. He retired due to paralysis caused by a stroke. His performance style, which combined virtuoso precision with a rich tone color, gained him widespread acclaim, and he became one of the great masters of the early 19th century, boasting brilliant performance techniques. As a composer, he left behind pioneering works, and in particular made a major contribution to the development of the concerto.

ベルギーのバイオリニスト,作曲家。バイオリン演奏技術の発達に大きな影響力を与えた人物の一人。神童といわれ,父親に伴われヨーロッパで数々の演奏旅行を行なう。1829~31年ブリュッセルでシャルル・ド・ベリオに師事,1833~34年ウィーンでジモン・ゼヒターに和声学を,1835~36年パリでアントニン・ライヒャに作曲を学んだ。その後もヨーロッパ各地で演奏し,アメリカ合衆国へ 3度演奏旅行を行なった(1843~44,1857~58,1870~71)。1846~51年ロシアのサンクトペテルブルグ音楽院,1871~73年ブリュッセル音楽院で教師を務め,サンクトペテルブルグではロシアのバイオリン演奏に多大な影響を及ぼした。脳卒中による麻痺のため退職。正確無比な超絶技巧と豊かな音色を兼ね備えた演奏スタイルは広い支持を集め,華麗な演奏技術を誇る 19世紀初期の巨匠の一人となった。作曲家としても先駆的な作品を残し,特に協奏曲の発達に大きく寄与した。
