A military commander in the Muromachi period. Also known as the Makishima clan. A local lord in Yamashiro Province, he was a powerful headman of the Gokasho estate (present-day Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture) owned by the Konoe family, and served as a priest at the Uji Rikyu Shrine. He was also known as Makishima Choja. In the mid-Muromachi period, he was a vassal of the Hatakeyama clan, the guardian of Yamashiro, but around the time of the Onin War, he was selected as a servant of the Muromachi Shogunate along with the Uji Oji clan, and formed the Shogun's personal guard. His base, Makishima Castle, was located on a small island in the Ogura Pond, and was a strategic point controlling the Nara Highway, becoming the center of the Shogunate's control over Minamiyamashiro. During the war, he acted as part of the Eastern Army. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
