Katahigashi [village] - Katahigashi

Japanese: 潟東[村] - かたひがし
Katahigashi [village] - Katahigashi
A village in Nishikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 6,271 (1995). Located in the alluvial plain on the west bank of the Nakanokuchi River, a branch of the Shinano River, in the central Echigo Plain, the settlement is built on a natural levee. In 1959, Ohara Village and Yotsugo Village, located east of the former Yoroigata Lagoon, were merged to form Katahigashi Village. Until the early modern period, this was a marshland called Gofuin-no, and it is a newly developed village developed after the Horeki era (1751-64). The area was frequently hit by floods, but in 1818 (Bunsei 1), a new river was excavated to drain Yoroigata Lagoon, and the repairs were completed in 1912.
