Tolerance policy

...The coexistence of denominations was officially recognized for the first time in the Holy Roman Empire at the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, but this was an attempt to resolve conflicts by force politically, and the only denominations that were permitted were Catholic and Lutheran. Moreover, in the sense that political rulers were supposed to determine the religion within their territories, it was far from the realization of true tolerance. The first time that a policy of tolerance (freedom of inner belief, freedom of worship, equality of trials, emancipation of civil servants, etc.) was institutionally realized in a nearly complete form was with the Royal Decree of Nantes in 1598. In France, where Calvinism had spread rapidly, sectarian conflicts were linked to political conflicts, and the Protestants strongly asserted their right to resist, leading to a long-term civil war that divided the country in two (the Religious Wars). ...
