A book containing the lyrics of Kōwaka dance. Strictly speaking, it refers to the illustrated woodblock books that were circulated as reading material in the early and mid-Edo period, but it generally includes the original copies that were written down as scripts. The number of pieces is listed as 36 in the genealogy of the Kōwaka families, the Kanbun, Jokyo, and Genroku "Shoseki Mokuroku" and "Gunsho Ichiran," but if the original copies are included, there are 50 known pieces. Most of them are based on military tales, such as "Nasu no Yoichi," "Atsumori," and "Kagekiyo," which depict the Genpei War, so-called Yoshitsune stories such as "Yashima" and "Eboshiori," and some based on the "Tales of Soga" such as "Yochisoga" and "Genpuku Soga." There are also some stories. Many of them have the same content as Noh plays, but they are composed as narrative pieces, and influenced the Kojoruri of the early modern period.
