Tie-dyeing - Shiborizome

Japanese: 絞染 - しぼりぞめ
Tie-dyeing - Shiborizome
Also called kukuri-zome. This is a method of dyeing patterns by tying with thread and partially resisting the dye, and the bleeding and fading give it a unique beauty. In the past, it was called kokechi or yuhata, and some examples from the Nara period are still preserved in the Shosoin Repository and other places. Tsujigahana-zome, which appeared in the Muromachi to Momoyama period, is a method of combining painted patterns with tie-dyeing. Depending on the resist-dyeing method, it is broadly divided into sewn tie-dye, where the cloth is sewn, rolled up with thread, and itajime-zome, where the cloth is tied with a board, and there are many other types depending on the pattern, such as kanoko, hitta, Miura-zome, murakumo, and willow. It is made as a handicraft by hand or with a simple machine, and is applied to Japanese clothing, bags, futons, and other items, as well as Japanese paper and leather. It is produced in Kyoto for silk, Arimatsu-zome in Nagoya for cotton, and folk art such as shikon-zome and akane-zome in Akita and Iwate prefectures.
