…Flemish painter. Commonly known as Bruegel the Elder. Also spelled Brueghel or Breughel. Born between 1525 and 1530. Began studying at P. Cook's workshop in Antwerp around 1545. In 1550, he collaborated with P. Baltens on the Glove Makers' Altarpiece for the St. Rombout Cathedral in Mechelen (now lost). In 1551, he was registered as a free master at the Guild of St. Luke (a painter's guild) in Antwerp.
