American physician and hematologist. Born in Boston. Graduated from Harvard University in 1912, Minot became professor of medicine at the same university in 1928. Around that time, he learned of a research report by University of Rochester pathology professor Whipple, who had improved secondary anemia in dogs by using a liver diet, and in collaboration with his assistant Murphy, applied this treatment to patients with pernicious anemia, hypochromic anemia, and agranulocytopenia. As a result, he achieved good results and announced his findings in 1926 as "Anemia Treated by Special Diet." In 1934, Minot, along with Whipple and Murphy, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He continued to research blood diseases throughout his life, and although he suffered from diabetes, he prolonged his life by giving insulin injections from 1922, and received many honors both at home and abroad.
