Gundi (English spelling)

Japanese: グンディ（英語表記）gundi

A rodent mammal of the Gundiidae family that resembles a guinea pig and is adept at rock climbing. It lives in rocky areas of the desert from Morocco to northwestern Libya in North Africa. It is 16-20 cm long, with a tail length of 1-2 cm, and weighs around 175 g. Its body is thick and sturdy, and its four short limbs have four digits each with bristles at the ends. Its claws are short but strongly curved with sharp tips. The two inner digits of its hind feet have comb-like projections that it uses to comb hair. It has a short tail, and one pair of nipples on each side of its chest and neck. The upper part of its body is gray-brown, and the underside is white or gray-white.

岩登りの巧みなテンジクネズミに似た齧歯（げつし）目グンディ科の哺乳類。北アフリカのモロッコからリビア北西部までの砂漠の岩場にすむ。体長16～20cm，尾長1～2cm，体重175g前後。体は太くがんじょう，四肢は短く各4指を備え先に剛毛がある。つめは短いが強く曲がり先が鋭い。後足の内側の2指には櫛（くし）状の突起があり，毛をすくのに用いる。尾が短く，乳頭は胸と首に各1対ある。体の上面は灰褐色，下面は白色か灰白色。
