Meinong (English spelling) Ritter von Handschuchsheim Alexius Meinong

Austrian philosopher. Born in Lemberg. He first studied history in Vienna, then switched to philosophy under Brentano, the founder of the German-Austrian school. In 1878 he qualified as a professor with a thesis on Hume, and from 1882 he taught philosophy at the University of Graz. His philosophy is called object theory, and it focuses on considering all objects that appear in conscious experience as objects themselves, regardless of whether they exist or not. Meinong distinguishes between representation and thought, calling the former object "objective" and the latter "objective thing." This "objective thing," or "what is," is the essence of the object itself, and object theory mainly considers the relationships that exist within this essence. His object theory has something in common with the essentialism found in Husserl's phenomenology, and also influenced the British neo-realist G. E. Moore.
