Roman Emperor (reigned 379-395). Born the son of a general, he became emperor of the eastern half of the empire, defended the empire against the threat of foreign tribes through wars and alliances, strictly banned paganism as an orthodox Catholic, and elevated Christianity to the state religion (392). He is famous for being asked to confess by Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, for the massacre that occurred in Thessalonica in 390, and submitting to it. In 394, he achieved the reunification of the empire. Upon his death, he divided the empire into two, East and West, and had his two sons succeed him, and the empire was never unified again. → Related articles Ancient Olympics | Stilicho | Western Roman Empire Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
