Whorl

Japanese: 渦状紋 - かじょうもん（英語表記）whorl

A fingerprint with a whorl or ring ridge in the center and two tridents. It is usually classified into six types: narrowly defined whorl, ring, double loop, twin loop, fetal loop, and spiral. The occurrence rate of whorls varies depending on the type of finger, and they are relatively common on the first finger (thumb) and fourth finger (ring finger). There are also racial differences. The occurrence rate is about 40% in Japanese and about 50% in Chinese, while it is about 27% in Caucasians. The Ainu show values close to those of Caucasians.

中心部に渦状または環状の隆線を有する指紋で，三叉が2個存在する。普通，狭義の渦状紋，環状紋，二重蹄状紋，双胎蹄状紋，有胎蹄状紋，螺旋紋の6種類に分類される。渦状紋の出現率は指種により差異があり，第1指 (母指) と第4指 (環指) に比較的多く現れる。また人種差も見出されている。日本人では約 40%，中国人では約 50%の出現率を示すのに対し，白人では約 27%である。アイヌは白人に近い値を示す。
