English aristocrat known for his canal development. He planned the development of a canal to transport coal from his estates in Lancaster to Manchester, and ordered the engineer James Brindley to build the first artificial canal in England in 1761. He also completed a canal between Liverpool and Manchester in 1772, halving the price of coal in Manchester and ushering in the "Canal Mania." 英国の貴族，運河開発で知られる。ランカスターにあった所領で算出する石炭をマンチェスターへ運ぶために運河の開発を計画，技師ブリンドリーJames Brindleyに命じて英国で最初の人工運河を1761年に建設させ，さらにリバプール〜マンチェスター間の運河も1772年に完成させ，マンチェスターにおける石炭価格を半減させて，〈運河狂時代〉を出現させた。
