English aristocrat known for his canal development. He planned the development of a canal to transport coal from his estates in Lancaster to Manchester, and ordered the engineer James Brindley to build the first artificial canal in England in 1761. He also completed a canal between Liverpool and Manchester in 1772, halving the price of coal in Manchester and ushering in the "Canal Mania."
