Born: November 30, 1642 in Trento
Died: August 31, 1709. Italian painter in Vienna. Born in northern Italy, he became a Jesuit monk in 1665, and was active in Rome from 1781 to 1702. His style of painting is characterized by fantastic effects created by the trompe l'oeil technique. From 1602 onwards, he lived in Vienna, and was involved in the decoration of churches attached to the Jesuit school and the university, as well as the palace of the Prince of Liechtenstein. His main work is the ceiling painting in the Basilica of Sant'Ignazio in Rome, Allegory of the Mission of the Jesuits (1691-94), and his main work, Perspectiva pictorum atque architectorum (1793-1700/2).

イタリアの画家。北イタリアに生れ，1665年にイエズス会の修道士となり，81～1702年にローマで活躍。トロンプ・ルイユの手法により幻想的効果をあげる画風が特徴。 02年以降ウィーンに滞在，イエズス派や大学付属の聖堂の装飾，リヒテンシュタイン公宮殿の装飾にあたった。主要作品はローマのサンティニャーツィオ聖堂の天井画『イエズス会士の伝道の寓意』 (1691～94) ，主著は『絵画と建築の遠近法』 Perspectiva pictorum atque architectorum (93～1700/2) 。
