A general term for animals in the genus Cercopithecus, family Cercopithecidae, order Primates, class Mammalia. There is no consensus on the classification of this genus Cercopithecus , but some say it is divided into 11 species, while others say it is subdivided into about 20 species. Native to Africa, most species live in tropical rainforests and the surrounding sparse forests, living in the trees, but one species, the savanna monkey C. aethiops , has expanded into the savanna. The distribution ranges of forest species overlap significantly, and there are known examples of interbreeding in the wild. They are slender, with most having a body length of 40 to 70 cm and a tail length of 60 to 100 cm. They have light-colored hair that grows locally on their cheeks, throat, nose, etc., and the pattern varies from species to species. They are omnivorous, eating mainly plant foods, but also insects. Although there are cases of multi-male groups of 10 to 50 individuals, a survey report from the forests of Cameroon has revealed that many species form small mono-male groups containing only one male. Groups usually have a range of 1 to 2 square kilometers and live within it. [Kenji Kawanaka] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
