An American chamber orchestra. It was founded in 1946 by professors from the Juilliard School of Music at the suggestion of William Schuman, the school's president. It gave its first concert in New York the following year, 1947. Initially, it attracted attention for its vivid interpretations of 20th century works by Schoenberg, Webern, and others, but gradually expanded its repertoire to include classical pieces. Since its founding, the members have changed little by little, and so have the performance style and repertoire. In particular, its Beethoven performances from the late 1960s to the early 1970s are considered to be a milestone in Beethoven string quartet performances after World War II, an achievement on a par with the Budapest String Quartet.
